Is OCD the Same As “OCD-Related Disorders” or
“Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors”
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be confused with disorders that fall under the category of “OCD-related disorders,” or “OCRDs” for short. OCRDs are similar to OCD in that they often involve preoccupations or worries that are followed by a behavior meant to neutralize the preoccupations. Other OCRDs involve recurrent body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) that are quite difficult to resist without therapeutic support. Although there are similarities to OCD, OCRDs and BFRBs are standalone disorders with their own unique treatment approaches. Fortunately, our Louisville KY licensed therapists at Reclaim Wellness Group have specialized training and expertise in assessing, diagnosing, and treating OCRDs and BFRBs.

Common OCD-related disorders (OCRDs) include the following:

-
Hoarding disorder
-
Body dysmorphic disorder
-
Olfactory reference syndrome (also referred to as jikoshu-kyofu)
-
Misophonia (disgust triggered by certain sounds like chewing, sniffing, or swallowing)
-
Emetophobia (fear of vomiting)

Common body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) may include the following:

-
Trichotillomania (hair-pulling)
-
Excoriation (skin-picking)
-
Onychophagia (nail-biting)
-
Chronic cheek- or lip-biting
-
Trichophagia (hair-eating)
-
Onychotillomania (nail-picking)
-
Dermatophagia (skin-biting)

OCRDs and BFRBs are treated using evidence-based approaches such as habit reversal training, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and exposure therapy.
