Questions
1 / What is Ketamine?
Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that has been widely used in hospitals for decades, but its use has expanded in recent years to individuals struggling with depression, anxiety and chronic pain. Research has consistently shown that ketamine infusion therapy has strong and rapid effects on mental health disorders like depression and anxiety. Board-certified physicians Drs Gonda and Pevtsov provide ketamine infusion therapy at this practice.
2 / How does ketamine-assisted psychotherapy work?
The dissociative effect of ketamine has antidepressant qualities experienced by patients. This altered sense of self can lead to a new state of contentment. Some patients report having sensations as if in a dream-like state, an out-of-body perspective, and disconnection from the sense of time. For an individual with depression or PTSD, the experience of dissociation in ketamine assisted therapy can provide space to rest, process, take new perspectives on the past and future, and reclaim their overall sense of wellness. The psychedelic experience of ketamine can provide an individual with new insights, connections, and peace. A trained therapist is present to help patients navigate the distress that may surface while the ketamine is delivered. The therapist helps patients feel grounded in the present moment, better equipped to process difficult memories and feelings, and confront internal events that have maintained depression and anxiety for so long.
3 / How does ketamine-assisted pain management work?
Aside from its sedative and analgesic effects, ketamine manages pain by acting against N-methyl-D-aspartate (NDMA), a chemical receptor found in the nervous system that modulates pain. Ketamine has been shown to be useful for patients who have taken opioids for pain and found them to be ineffective.
4 / How is ketamine administered?
Physicians at Reclaim Wellness and Ketamine Center administer ketamine through an intravenous (IV) pump. Our staff prepares and creates a peaceful and relaxing environment tailored to each patient’s preferences. Although the clinic is equipped with various therapeutic amenities, patients are encouraged to bring personal items (i.e., pillows, blankets, headphones, music, etc.) to enhance the overall level of comfort felt during the appointment.
5 / Are there certain medications or supplements I should stop taking prior to being administered ketamine?
The medical staff at Reclaim Wellness and Ketamine Center will conduct a thorough assessment to make sure you are eligible and safe to use ketamine. Notify the medical staff if you are taking Lamictal (Lamotrigine) or benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax [Alprazolam], Ativan [Lorazepam], Valium [Diazepam], Klonopin [Clonazepam], etc.). You do not need to stop taking antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or tricyclics prior to receiving ketamine. Opiates, muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatories do not interfere with ketamine. Please do not adjust your dose or frequency of use of any prescribed medication without first consulting with your prescribing practitioner.
